Machine Maintenance Personnel Rely On The Effectiveness Of Condition Monitoring Systems

By Cynthia Z. Garrison

Machine maintenance workers will be the first to explain how machine condition monitoring is a key component to overall plant success. When this critical practice is neglected, worker productivity and plant availability diminishes. Therefore, within the bigger picture of daily operations, ineffective monitoring can be detrimental to a plant's bottom line.

By definition, condition monitoring is the process where personnel employ advanced technologies to monitor a machine's condition, and/or predict future maintenance needs. A monitoring system can take on many forms and be either offline or online. And when it comes to tracking systems, there are a few things that a plant should consider. An effective online monitoring system must have many advantages, and in particular, the following two.

Easy access to results is one of the first features a monitoring system should have. Machine professionals tasked with keeping track of a given system's condition should be able to view results quickly, and with one glance. This will provide for the earliest warnings possible. And when early warning signs are received, responsible parties are able to swiftly implement corrective measures. This results in properly maintained machinery, which is necessary for complete plant availability.

Secondly, an effective monitoring system will have the capability to quickly query and report germane statistics. By way of a customizable dashboard, these reports must distinctly isolate the problem sector or area. These detailed reports allow machine maintenance professionals to focus solely on the problems at hand, rather than wasting value lead time reviewing non-relevant information. As with expedient access to results, lead time is critical. And the quantity of lead time is exactly what determines a situation's outcome.

When it comes to monitoring systems, these are two of the most important advantages plant personnel will need. Suffice it to say, an effective condition monitoring system, one that allows for easy access to results and statistics reporting capabilities, is part and parcel to the foundation a productive plant is built upon. When machine maintenance professionals have the means to remain productive, plant operations go off without a hitch. After all, uninterrupted operations must be and is the primary goal.

At the end of the day, a plant must stay online with structurally and mechanically sound equipment to stay competitive and profitable. And despite a plant's industry (e.g., Marine, Offshore Oil and Gas, On or Off Highway, Industrial or otherwise), they all share in a single underpinning: Practicing a pattern of effective condition monitoring is the key to success.
