What Abrasion Resistant Coating Refers To

By Rosalind Estes

Abrasion resistant coating is a type of paint covering that is not corroded, scratched or pealed off. They resist wearing away of parts of items due to contact and mechanical wear. Due to there function, they are made to be durable and last long on surfaces. They provide protection against chemical reactions and friction related actions. They have different colors with a typical smell of paint. Some have strong odors that resemble that of petroleum products.

Mechanical wear is grouped into four categories that is fatigue, erosive, adhesive wear. Adhesive wear result from contacts made between two metals surfaces. As they move past each other, wear occurs. Components in which this occurs include engine bearings and landing gears. Abrasive occur when hard objects like metals under a weight move over a surface. The surface chips, gets cut and gouged. When fluids under great pressure hit against a surface, they cause erosive wear. Repeated movement against a surface results into fatigue.

These varnish can be applied on surfaces made of all steel types, carbon fibers and aluminum. They have a strong adhesive force between them and the surfaces. This means that surfaces have to be very strong to endure the sticky effect. They are made from varied kinds of metals and fluorides.

M techniques are available for application. They include airless spray, combustion wire process, plural spray, plasma, electrostatic and powder metalizing. Advancements have been done so that more surfaces can be applied on. Each make of the paint may be specific to a particular type of surface.

There are several industrial and domestic applications. In firms, they apply on equipments like storage facilities and most machinery. Car manufacturers apply them on exterior and interior body parts. Mining machinery and pulleys are coated to give them protection.

abrasion resistant coating is good for the right application. Parts and equipments that cannot withstand it should not be applied on. It provides a lot of assistance especially to parts that are prone to damage by physical and environmental factors.
