Protecting your valuables inside your car

By Michael Brooks

Essentially, there are several factors which effect your car being stolen: the make of your car; is it desirable, easy to break into or a make beloved of joyriders?, where you park your car, the security measures you take, and whether or not there is the added bonus to thieves of valuables being left inside the car.

If you are leaving your car for a few hours in the daytime in a city centre, there are some precautions you can take to ensure your car is still there when you get back. Never leave windows open even by a tiny crack - though this can be tempting in very hot weather - as even the smallest gap can let a thief prise their way in. Use a windscreen reflector to keep your car cooler, without the security risk. Similarly, do not leave your car running unattended, for example, if waiting for the air conditioning to work or the window to unfreeze; this is very risky, and it's much safer to stand near, or sit in your car.

Where you park your car is also of prime importance. A garage is ideal, but you can make your car safer in the open by: parking as close to the house as possible if parking on a driveway, parking in well-lit and travelled areas if parking on the road, and using secure parking lot which employs security guards if you have that option.

When a thief has spotted your car as a potential for burglary there are several deterrents you can have in place to change their mind. Have a car alarm installed and stick alarm warning signs on the car - these signs work as a deterrent even if there isn't an alarm system installed. A visible security device such as a steering wheel lock also works as a potential thief may decide to move on to a car more easily stolen.

These simple steps can help protect your valuables, and make sure you're not the victim of an opportunistic burglary. Making sure to always lock your doors and close your windows can go a long way towards protecting your valuables.
