Vegetable Oil: Practical Replacement For Diesel Fuel?

By Brickter Bond

Did it ever enter your mind that vegetable oil could possibly be a different fuel source? Did you ever before expect to see gas prices to go well over $4 a gallon? At one time diesel energy seemed like an excellent and cheaper alternative to regular gas. Even though everyone is concerned about the shortage of oil, there are no mandatory steps to cut back on the amount we use. There are no efforts by the car companies to stop making big, gas sucking cars. There doesn't seem to be any sort of assistance from using fuel additives. What's the point of marketing them if they don't work at all.

Vegetable oil can be used as an alternative fuel but it hasn't been getting as much awareness as others. A diesel car can use either diseal or vegetable oil as fuel. There doesn't seem to be a rise in the number of people converting to vegetable oil. It seems that using vegetable oil is not a problematic option but exactly why does vegetable oil get made for fuel. Presently, Americans waste about 140 billion gallons of gas while eating places throughout the country dispose about 100 million gallons of vegetable oil. There is a big concern about the shortage of fossil fuels and the environment, but there is not much talk about using vegetable oil. Vegetable oil will not affect the environment since it is biodegradable.

There are folks who might well be concerned with the reliability and the safety of using vegetable oil. The original car engine that Rudolph Diesel created was able to operate on vegetable oil. The vegetable oil powered engine came out at the 1900 Paris World Exhibition but was not ever put into production because petroleum diesel was cheaper to use. Due to this, present day diesel engines can still run on vegetable oil.

Feedback on how well vegetable oil works as fuel happen to be mixed. Some felt that there was an increase in coking of the engine while others never have noticed any difference. In the case of trustworthiness, people who have used vegetable oil on older vehicles have not noticed any problems. Individuals who converted are either utilizing a conversion kit or a filtering process for their vegetable oil. There are still individuals that make their own vegetable oil more viscous by mixing it with fluids. If there is a possibility of a break down, it is hard to determine if vegetable oil is the problem.

Whether or not vegetable oil can be the right alternative fuel is difficult to say. Vegetable oil appears like it's got potential but people are still longing for that one fuel that would be effective and cheaper than petroleum fuel.
