5 Warning Signs for Cars at Brisbane Car Auctions

By Jack Smith

When you're attending Brisbane car auctions, like any other auctions, you aren't going to have the opportunity to conduct a detailed analysis of the vehicle before you buy it. Wouldn't it be nice to have a list of things you could look for to help you make a decision about whether to place a bid for the car? Well read on!

Tip 1: Are there clear indications of a crash? If half of the front of the car is falling off or looks to be a different color to the rest of the panels of the car that should be an alert that it has been repaired and if it's been repaired chances are it was in a crash. The more repair work that has been done, the worse the crash probably was! So keep your eyes peeled for signs such as this (in the engine too).

Tip 2: Is there a detailed service history? If the car owner was diligent he or she would have kept a log book of each time the car was repaired. Hopefully the repair and service history book includes a stamp from a licensed mechanic (this need not be a dealership or genuine brand-name mechanic of course). This will show you that the car is probably in the condition a car of its age should be and will be honest about any major repairs that were performed. You can check this before you place a bid, which is great!

Tip 3: Pay very close attention to the car's interior. Obviously inside the car will be darker than outside so problems may be much harder to spot. Pay attention to the following in particular: smells (like stale, mouldy smells that may indicate the car having been flooded), mud stains, frayed seat belts and generally missing knobs and missing dials.

Tip 4: Does everything inside the car work as it should? Turn the radio and/or CD player up to as loud as it will go, change the treble and bass settings and make sure that all works as it should. Turn the air conditioner on and make sure the temperature settings work and any dual climate control systems do too. Do any warning light come on? Do all of the courtesy lights on the doors and reading light work? Take as long as you need and make sure you don't regret overlooking something!

Tip 5: Scrutinise the suspension! Lean on all of the car's corners where the shock absorbers are located and see if the car smoothly rebounds only once or twice. If it's more than once or twice and goes way up and way down like a yo-yo, you know that something is probably up with the suspension. Do this test on some similar cars in the auction and you can get a feel for how the one you're keen on buying fairs.
