Prevent Accidents By Considering Other Road Users

By Dana Tieszen

You are going to encounter many different conditions and situations any time you drive regularly. While you find yourself being flanked by many vehicles and different types of drivers, there will be situations that will occur unexpectedly. If you are alert to this you can prevent collisions from happening and you especially need to take account of the different types of road user and the challenges they can present. This information will focus on becoming considerate when driving to minimize the chances of getting into an accident on the road.

The first type of street user we shall consider are cyclists and some of the situations you will encounter with them. As is the situation with car or truck drivers, you'll discover cyclists that ride their bike with an awareness for other people on the road and those that do not. One situation that can be dangerous is during heavy traffic when it becomes harder to see cyclists weaving in and out and nearing you from the rear. Before you switch lanes or pull out, you'll want to look at your rear view mirror, look over your shoulder and be wary of your car's blind spots. Some cyclists like to travel in groups therefore be cautious when approaching them and do not overtake them until you are far away from them.

Motorcyclists are like cyclists however they are obviously considerably faster. A lot of bikers will try to drive defensively but there will always be those who want to ride at speed and this can be particularly dangerous when they appear all of a sudden from behind. One of the positive aspects of operating a motorcycle is the ability to weave in and out of slow moving traffic, so never ever assume that there is nothing behind you that can overtake your car.

Larger sized motor vehicles such as lorries and coaches present different challenges and you certainly want to avoid accidents with these if you can. Lorries and delivery vans journey just about everywhere and the driver may have a tendency to make unanticipated maneuvers since they may not know where they are going. Some of these drivers may also be sleepy or tired from the extended drives so you need to be sure that they can see you as you approach. There are occasions you may have a driver who isn't really familiar with the signs or traffic laws, so if you see one of those, stay as far away as you can.

Of course, be extra careful of pedestrians especially about busy areas like schools. It is usually best to drive slowly and deliberately to prevent any accident. Any time you establish the habit of driving with consideration to other road users you can prevent accidents and keep yourself safe on the road.
